The role of reuse in a Just Transition
We know reuse plays a crucial role in a just transition to a more sustainable economy—but we’ve not yet explicitly stated how and why this is so.
Looking upstream: The linear economy & its social impacts
Reducing resource consumption and improving production processes can develop more resilient, equitable systems that prioritize long-term sustainability for the economy, people, and the environment.
Why a reuse economy is a just economy
At its root, the reuse movement is a social and environmental justice movement.
Honoring the Environmental Justice Movement
Celebrating some of the invaluable gains the environmental justice movement has made recently – and recognizing the ongoing efforts of just a few of the groups within our networks.
Environmental & Social Justice Groups You Can Support this Giving Tuesday
This Giving Tuesday, we're grateful to organizations solving environmental and social justice issues in marginalized communities. These causes are deeply connected to Upstream’s work and guiding principles. We hope you'll consider giving to a frontline group today and beyond.
Exploring the History of Environmental Justice to Support Anti-Racism
In honor of Black History Month, learn the past and present of today’s environmental justice (EJ) movement. Find out how environmental racism has played a role in the mistreatment of communities of color throughout United States history – and how reuse can help drive equal access to economic, social, and environmental opportunities.
One Year After George Floyd
It’s been one year since George Floyd was brutally murdered at the hands of police. George Floyd has left a legacy of transformation for organizations like UPSTREAM and for every American who has felt motivated to break down the structures that uphold white supremacy and hold our fellow citizens back. Today, we want to acknowledge this moment and honor George Floyd and the countless other lives lost to police brutality and violent acts of racism.
This hate must stop
It’s time for the hate against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to stop. As a nation, we must come together and denounce this violence while deplatforming the voices of hate that seek to divide us.
Moving forward in America
We must find ways to move forward as a nation and to learn to see each other as neighbors again – to forge a new social contract that seeks to truly lift all people up and to come together on the issues of our time.
We are all neighbors
Let’s do our best to find ways to reach out and dive deep, to be courageous listeners and common ground seekers, to leave the finger-pointing behind and jumpstart the friendmaking.
Reflections on Racial Justice & Environmentalism
Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali and Miriam Torres brought their invaluable perspective, expertise and advice to a livestream discussion on 9/24.
Why the planet needs us to care about each other
The gap between environmentalism and environmental justice can be large, but there are many opportunities for them to intersect.
For environmental groups to be anti-racist, we must come to terms with the past
An honest look at white privilege and white bias at UPSTREAM – and in the environmental movement and plastics space where we work.
Black lives are not disposable
UPSTREAM stands with #BlackLivesMatter.
